We recently were in Center City Philadelphia to clean up some knob and tube wiring for a Lauterborn Electric repeat customer who recently purchased a home. The home inspection report read that the knob and tube wiring was relegated to the second floor front bedroom and dining room light. When we started removing the knob and tube wiring we discovered the wiring in the receptacles in the dining room and hall ways including the 3way switching system between floors was also knob and tube wiring. The images show a receptacle in the dining room which was boot legged (rigged to give the appearance of a grounded receptacle). Not only is this practice against all electrical codes, it can cause damage to sensitive electronic equipment and become a shock hazard. To remove the wiring we needed to create an opening in the living room ceiling to allow for the new wiring. The images show the clean opening of the plaster/wood lathe ceiling which was done with a grinder. Once we completed the wiring and installed all devices, the relieved to have the knob and tube removed customer contacted her patch/drywall mechanic to close the opening.
