Storm Water Burns out GFCI

by Lauterborn Electric on April 19th, 2017

Lauterborn Electric Lauterborn ElectricWe were recently called out to a Center City property that had some power out. The issue involved a breaker not resetting that controlled lights and receptacles in the rear of the house. As soon as we stepped out of the back door we noticed an exterior GFCI seemed to have caught fire. The electrical repair was simple, we replaced the weather box and installed a weather and tamper resistant GFCI with a bubble cover to bring it up to code. However, finding out why this happened was more important. We discovered that the problem was due to poor gutter placements between two roofs. The storm water was rushing over the gutter and onto the GFCI. The customer was aware of the problem and the issue is being resolved.
