Lauterborn ElectricWe at Lauterborn Electric often gets called out to a property or a business with a tripped breaker or blown fuse. In many cases, it’s a simple troubleshoot, but in some instances it’s a more serious wiring issue. Here are some reasons as to why you would blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker.

  1. Something as simple as a shorted filament in a light bulb can create a loss of power. If you turn the switch to a fixture off and the breaker resets the lamp in a fixture can be the issue.
  2. Overloading a circuit will cause a breaker or fuse to fail. We often see this condition if you have older Knob and tube wiring in your home and plug in electric consuming appliances such as space heaters or air conditioners. Running additional circuitry to appliances is the solution to this condition.
  3. Faulty appliances or older lamps can cause a tripping of a breaker or fuse. One way to determine if it’s an appliance or a lamp is to unplug all appliances and try to reset the breaker.
  4. Over extended older wiring can become frayed over years of over use and create a short circuit condition. Oversizing light bulbs can over heat wiring to the point of the insulation melting creating a short circuit condition. Follow wattage recommendations of the light fixture to avoid this condition
